Winners of the Canada Bay Club All Schools Relay Crowned

Well, the Canada Bay Club All Schools Relay was swum and won.

Thanks to the timing equipment for causing a little bit of controversy with the handicapping and results.

Russell Lea Public School Team 6 comprising Cohen van Loo, Noah Hale Jody Fowley and Grace Fowler were worthy winners.

Jody’s victory comes hot on the heels of her gold medal performance at the Battle on the Bay. After the relay Jody said her sights were now set on Tokyo 2021,

A huge Thank You to Andrew Wooley from the Canada Bay Club who came along to watch the race and hand out the trophy at the end of the proceedings.

We look forward to having our end of season celebration and trophy night at the Canada Bay Club’s sister club the Concord Bowling Club in late May.

Week 18: Another action packed schedule…

This week’s program

This week we have another action packed schedule.

Our regular program starts with the 200m Freestyle Championship races.

These will be closely followed by the final of the Tom Williams 50m Freestyle Handicap and our regular 50m freestyle events.

Our “B” for the week is Butterfly with the heats of the Fred Congdon 50m Butterfly Handicap. Will Toby Hansen be able to back up his magnificent win from last season and make another final?

On top of this we have our inaugural Canada Bay Club sponsored All Schools Relay. We have a brand new trophy and Andrew Wooley, Business Development and Community Engagement Manager at the Canada Bay Club coming along to present it. Relay entries are now closed and we’re busy putting the teams together.

Battle on the Bay

Well done to all our swimmers at the Battle on the Bay and well done to Ashfield Swimming Club for putting on such a magnificent event. Make sure you check out the earlier posts with the results. Might be our turn next year…

A few more photos from the day.

We’ll work on everyone looking at the one camera next time.
Happy little Vegemites.
What you grow up to be if you eat all the vegemite in the house.
More bling for the Fowler household.
Relay action.
Good to see the club colours on display.
The things you do to keep yourself amused at a swimming carnival. A special prize this Saturday for whoever can name the owners of these fine feet in order…
The Simpsons… Ashleigh and Steve “Bart” Simpson. Quality Daddy Daughter time at the pool.
Thanks Lynette for helping ensure things ran to plan – especially for helping Tadhg Donnellan with herding cats for the relays.

Past Members Morning Tea – Saturday 27th of March!

Open invitation to all past members of Drummoyne Swimming Club…

Drummoyne Swimming Club has a long and successful history, made richer by the people who have swum with the Club over the years. We appreciate that many members move on once their kids grow up or they prefer fitness training over early morning races. But we also know that members retain fond memories and friendships from their time at Swim Club. Maintaining a connection with our past is an important part of continuing the traditions and strengths of the club.

So, on behalf our the current crop of swimmers I would like to extend an invitation to all past swimmers to please join us for a morning tea at our final meet of the season on Saturday the 27th of March 2021.

We would be especially pleased to welcome any Life Members who can make it along for the event.

We’ll supply the tea, coffee and croissants and you supply the stories of past glories!

Don’t forget to bring your togs and have a swim if you wish!

This March we’re swimming “Laps for Life”!

As a second charitable initiative, we’re proposing to get involved with Laps for Life in support of youth mental health.

Laps for Life is a swimming challenge that raises money to support youth mental health initiatives by Reachout.com.

Why Laps for Life?

One in four young people in Australia is currently experiencing a mental health difficulty, and 70% of those who need help, don’t get it. This isn’t the only concerning statistic, as sadly, suicide remains the leading cause of death for young people in Australia.

For me, mental health is a very personal topic. Having experienced mental health difficulties, I understand how tough it can be and the toll it can take on your life. I want to assist as many people as possible to improve their mental health.

Ian Thorpe AM, Patron and Board Member of ReachOut Australia

What are we doing?

We’ll be counting laps from Junior Squads towards a goal of swimming 10,000 metres.

Special Thanks to the Canada Bay Club!

New grant from Canada Bay Club

Our Gold Sponsor the Canada Bay Club has once again shown their commitment to the Club and approved a grant to purchase some much needed components for the timing and race management system.

The Canada Bay Club has been a magnificent supporter of the Drummoyne Swimming Club over the years and their regular grants help us keep the Club running smoothly. In previous years they have provided funds for diving block covers, timers and other essential equipment needed to operate the Club.

This year the grant will allow us to purchase:

  • A new radio unit linking the pool deck with the club room
  • A new starter’s microphone
  • A new starter’s wireless unit
  • A new wireless scoreboard adapter

While, this may not sound all that exciting, it is super important to the functioning of Saturday mornings. All of this equipment will help us keep races running to schedule and with minimal errors.

Show your support to the Canada Bay Club

The Canada Bay Club has been a meeting place for the local community for more than 50 years. Since opening in 1966, the culturally diverse club has grown from a small social sports centre to a club with state-of-the-art function rooms, two restaurants, live entertainment and a kids’ arcade.

As a champion of the Inner West’s local community, Canada Bay Club supports schools, sporting associations, charities and community groups through its grant program.

Next time you are planning a night out head to the Canada Bay Club.

FYI, we’ll be holding our end of season awards at the Canada Bay Club’s sister club the Concord Bowling Club in late May. Stay tuned for more details…

Food Bank Charity Raffle and Zooper Dooper Sale!

As some of you may remember, last season we donated the proceeds of one of our raffles to support Bushfire relief.

This weekend the club will be supporting the charity Food Bank.

All proceeds for this week’s raffle and the sale of Zooper Doopers will be donated to Food Bank.

Food Bank is the largest hunger relief charity in Australia, providing food and groceries to front line charities that feed vulnerable Australians.

Just one of the ways they support Australians around the country is through the school breakfast program. Food Bank provides regular breakfast to over 132, 000 children.

To find out more about the amazing work Food Bank does visit https://www.foodbank.org.au.

So, throw your support behind our annual charity fundraiser and buy some raffle tickets and Zooper Doopers this Saturday.

Week 17: Championships, Finals and the Battle on the Bay!

Well done to all the brave peeps who braved the elements and the 400m Championship last week. As too much swimming is never enough this week we have another action packed meet. And then, to top it off, we the have the Battle of the Bay at the new Ashfield pool. Rest up this week to save your energy for this high weekend of swimming!

Congratulations to last week’s Championship and Bill Gallie Handicap race winners

First up, congratulations to the winners of our 400m Championship races – Natalie Borozan and Matthew Svoboda and to Evelyn Kerr who took out the prestigious Bill Gallie 50m Breaststroke Handicap Trophy Final.

This week’s events

Our first event this Saturday will be the 100m Freestyle Championship race.

For our second event this week we have another one of our premiere trophy races – the Tom Brown 50m Backstroke Handicap Final. We have a young field who’ll be fighting it out to receive the trophy from an extended posse from the Brown clan. The Tom Brown Final will be followed by 50m, 30m and 20m backstroke events as usual.

To round out the morning’s swimming we have the 200m Medley along with 4 x 30m and 4 x 20m medleys.

Battle on the Bay – 100 DSC Entrants!

If you feel like you’ve been bombarded with emails and news posts about the Battle on the Bay you’ll be glad to know that it has finally arrived.

This year we have 100 entrants. This is quite an achievement for a family swimming club without an associated swim school or competitive squad program. Good on you all for getting on board with what will be a really fun day.

Please check the recent emails to ensure you are up to speed with both your own events and the order of the day’s activities. Please also check out if you or one of your squids has been put into a relay team.

We will need to provide time keepers for 2 lanes during the event. We will need volunteers to help with this.

Lastly don’t forget to rest your tonsils in readiness to cheer our swimmers home to glorious victories.

With a bit of luck it might be Drummoyne receiving the Battle on the Bay trophy this year!

Reminder: Please sign up for the All Schools Relay!

Our second relay for the year is the Canada Bay Club sponsored All Schools Relay.

The “All Schools Relay” is a relay race for everyone associated with a local school. It’s open to kids, parents, grandparents and others – just nominate the school you have an association with.

This relay race will be held on Saturday the 27th of February 2021 at Swim Club.

Please follow this link to enter. Please remember to enter for each person who is planning to swim – Enter here.

Encourage new swimmers to come along

We want to use the event to encourage new swimmers to come along and give swim club a go. So, please spread the word amongst your school friends and ask them to come down for a free trial. It would be optimal if they could come down for a race before the 27th to get a time.

Format

The format will be a mixed handicap relay. The number of participants will be determined from the entries received. There may be more than one team from some schools.

Week 16: The Bill Gallie 50M Breaststroke Handicap Final and much more!

This Saturday we have a chock-a-block race meet with:

Planned activities in the 2nd half of the season…

This information was buried deep in our newsletter last week so just to make sure you know about what is coming up here it is again…

Canada Bay Club All Schools Relay

As you know we’ve got the 2021 Battle on the Bay coming up on the 20th of February. That’s our chance to come together as a club and show our neighbouring clubs just what we’re about by knocking Leichhardt off the top of the leader board and having “Drummoyne” inscribed on the trophy.

Following on from the Battle on the Bay we’ve got a few other initiatives planned, including:

The Canada Bay Club All Schools Relay – This new relay will be held on the 27th of February 21 and we’ll put out some information about, this starting next week. The trophy for this race is dedicated to the Canada Bay Club – one of our great supporters over the years.

See this week’s separate post about how to register for this event.

The Food Bank Raffle

The Food Bank Raffle – As some of you may remember last season we donated the proceeds of one of our raffles to support Bush Fire relief. We’re looking to continue that concept again this season. As a club we’re going to support Food Bank.

The proceeds from our raffle on the 27th of February will be donated to Food Bank to support the work they are doing fighting hunger.

Did you know that: three in ten Australians now experiencing food insecurity had not gone hungry before the pandemic and that young people – Gen Z are being hardest hit by the impact of COVID-19?

Foodbank is addressing this crisis by supplying more food and groceries than ever before to charities for distribution to vulnerable people.

Laps for Life Challenge

As a second charitable initiative, we’re proposing to get involved with Laps for Life in support of youth mental health – Laps for Life is a swimming challenge that raises money to support youth mental health initiatives by Reachout.com.

We’ll set a club challenge and, over the course of March, use Adult and Junior Squads to meet our collective goal. Swimmers will be asked to seek donations from friends and family along the way.

More information about both these charitable initiatives will be forthcoming in the next few weeks.
