Heats for George Wheaton “BBB”

This Saturday is your opportunity to contest one of the most highly-prized trophies of the season – the George Wheaton 50m “BBB” Handicap!

BBB is short for Breaststroke, Backstroke and Butterfly.  It’s a unique event in which competitors race each other with different “B” strokes in the same race on handicap.  So  a swimmer in one lane may swim Butterfly, another Breaststroke and a third Backstroke!

To seed the event, we need to know which “B” stroke you will swim this Saturday.  You must have already completed a 50m Time Trial for your chosen stroke, so if you’re new to the Club this season, choose a stroke for which you’ve already set a time.

Please select your chosen stroke (50m Breaststroke, Backstroke or Butterfly) when you sign in this Saturday.

The BBB heats will be raced after the 50m Freestyle sprint.

Following the BBB, our long distance swim will be 400m Freestyle. To qualify for the 400m race, you must have a current 200m time less than 200 seconds (3m 20s). We have 200m, 4x30m and 4x20m Freestyle options for other swimmers.

Feedback on 20m/30m experiment

Last week we experimented with switching around the order of the 20m/30m races, to condense the activity and enjoyment for our younger swimmers.

Following your feedback on this trial format, we have decided to tweak it further this week, to reduce the long wait for other swimmers, while still shortening the overall experience for younger swimmers.

We are proposing to hold races in the following order this week, with the 4x30m and 4x20m races immediately following the 30m and 20m form stroke events:

  • 50m Freestyle
  • 30m and 20m Freestyle
  • 50m Form Stroke (BBB and Backstroke Time Trials)
  • 30m and 20m Backstroke
  • 4x30m and 4x20m Freestyle
  • 400m and 200m Freestyle

This format will allow the 30m and 20m swimmers to arrive and sign in shortly after 7.30am, while the 50m Freestyle is underway, and finish up before the 400m long distance event.

For safety reasons, the pool operator has requested that 20m swimmers do not dive in from the shallow end of the pool, due to the 1.1m depth.  We are currently reviewing this situation, but, for the moment, we require 20m swimmers to start in the pool. This restriction does not affect 30m and other swimmers diving in from the deep end.

Also the pool lifeguards have issued a friendly reminder that parents need to supervise their children in the toddler pool at all times.

Swim squads going strong!

Let’s get fit together!

Adult squads (Monday|Wednesday|Friday mornings) and Junior squads (Tuesday|Thursday mornings) are becoming very popular, with over 20 swimmers attending Junior squads.

Squad training sessions are included in your membership fees (only need to pay for pool entry), so we hope to see you all there!

Late comers miss out on race points!

It was fantastic to see so many new and returning members at Swim Club last week. To ensure that we finish all of our races by 10.30am its important that we start our races on time at 7.30am, which means being signed in by 7.15am.

To encourage everyone to arrive on time, tardy swimmers will be put into a ‘late comers’ race and will miss out on valuable race points!

‘Late comer’ races are similar to time trials, with all swimmers starting off ‘Go’ and swimmers earning a solitary point for their effort.

We look forward to seeing you all early on Saturday morning!
