Week 9: 50M Championship Race & 200M Medley Handicap Final

It was great to have members of the Wheaton family with us last Saturday to present the George Wheaton Trophy to Ben Playford following his victory, doing breaststroke, in the final of the BBB. Young George, great great grandson of the trophy’s namesake mused about how great it would be to have a crack at getting his name on the trophy next season… If George can post a few times at a local race in his home area near Wollongong we’ll see what we can do…

We’ve got more serious racing again this week with the final of the Five Dock Rotary 200M Individual Medley Handicap race as well as our first championship race of the season.

Time to Register Now!

Completed a free trial? Enjoyed Squads or racing? It’s time to register!

The season is now well underway and we would love all swimmers that have been participating in squads and/or Saturday races to join up as Drummoyne Swimming Club members.

It is important that swimmers are registered members as registration fees help us cover the costs of running the club. More members allows us to keep fees as low as possible.

Season 2023/24 memberships are now available to purchase via the Swim Central portal.

Since last summer there have been changes to the ACTIVE KIDS voucher (dropping from $100 to $50) and increases to Swimming Australia / Swimming NSW fees. So in response we’ve made a few tweaks to our membership structure and fees, namely:

  • We’ve added a junior club swimmer category with a reduced fee to offset the impact of the reduction in the ACTIVE KIDS voucher, and
  • Increased fees on a couple of fee categories to help cover the club’s costs.

Our new Membership Categories and Fees are as follows:

Member CategoryStandard FeeFamily Concession Fee
Club Swimmers*$11015% discount
Club Swimmers 10 years and under at 31/10/2023*$8515% discount
Second Claim Members$8015% discount
Squad Members$8015% discount
State Competition Swimmers $13015% discount
Non-swimmers (Spectator/Supporter)$3515% discount

* Unless you are planning to swim competitively for Drummoyne at Swimming NSW sanctioned events the Club Swimmer category is likely to be the one for you.

Instructions on using the Swim Central portal, read here:

How To Register With Swim Central – Swimming Australia Online Support Portal

ACTIVE KIDS vouchers can be redeemed when registering your child.

More information is available on the club’s Fees and Registration page.

Got questions or need help?

If you have any questions about membership categories or how to use Swim Central please reach out to our Registrar Dave Smith via registrar@drummoyneswimclub.com.au.

Week 6: Double Trophy Heats – Backstroke and Medley

This weekend we continue the heats for our perpetual trophy races with the Tom Brown 50M Backstroke handicap event and the Five Dock Rotary 200M Individual Medley.

Last season the amazing Eloise Pidd held off a strong finishing field to claim the Tom Brown trophy. A large contingent of the Brown family were on hand to present it to a beaming Eloise. While the equally amazing Georgia Romaniuk took out the Five Dock Rotary 200M Individual Medley Trophy – a huge effort in a really tough event.

After a cool morning last Saturday this week the forecast is sunny and warm so make sure you set the alarm and come along.

Our program is as follows:

EventDetail
Sprint100M Freestyle
50M, 30M or 20M Freestyle
Form Stroke50M* Backstroke
50M 30M or 20M Backstroke

The 200M Individual Medley races will serve as the heats for the Five Dock Medley Handicap Tropy.

Ladies Social Night

One last reminder that the ladies social night is on this Thursday at Ribs & Burgers starting at 7pm. Please register your attendance using the Event on TeamApp. Mum’s and minders are encouraged to take their girls along.

Results from Week 5

There are a few corrections to results from last week. They have now been updated on the results page.

Timekeepers Needed

Just a reminder that we always need parents and swimmers to act as timekeepers! This helps ensure our races run as smoothly as possibly on Saturday mornings.

If you are swimming as well as timing it is a good idea to team up with someone that swims different heats to you.

Timing is very easy to do – just pick a lane and press the buttons on the blue stopwatches when your swimmer touches the wall.

The final step is to write down the times on the stopwatches onto the time sheet, in case we need to refer to them as a backup.

Each week we need someone to act as the chief timekeeper. This role sounds fancy but it’s quite simple too. The chief timekeeper gets to hold the walkie talkie and answer queries from the club room about times in particular races.

You can nominate to act as Chief Timekeeper using the duty roster function in this week’s event on TeamApp.

We welcome any feedback or other suggestions for keeping races moving along.

Week 4: 100M Breaststroke and Geoff Roper 200M F/S Handicap Heats

We had a lovely morning last Saturday with warm weather and sunny skies. Swimmers had fun with butterfly and the medley! This week the action keeps coming with breaststroke and a 200M freestyle. Excitingly, we have the heats for our first trophy race – the Geoff Roper 200M Freestyle handicap race. Last year’s winner was Hayden Howard. Hayden has already posted some great times this summer. Will someone be able to knock him off this time?

Our program is as follows:

EventDetail
Sprint100M Freestyle
50M, 30M or 20M Freestyle
Form Stroke100M Breaststroke
50M, 30M or 20M Butterfly
Distance Event4 x 50M Freestyle*
4 x 30M Freestyle
4 x 20M Freestyle

Club Captains

We’ve got one nomination each for the male and female Club Captain positions. If you think this is the job for you please drop Adrian a message. We’ll hold elections, if required, on Saturday to fill the roles.

World Famous BBB

On Saturday the 4th of November we will hold the heats for the George Wheaton BBB handicap race. BBB is short for Breaststroke, Backstroke and Butterfly. It’s a unique event in which competitors race each other with different “B” strokes in the same race on handicap. So a swimmer in one lane may swim Butterfly, another Breaststroke and a third Backstroke!

This year there is no separate entry form. You just need to nominate your stroke using TeamApp.

All going well we hope to have members of the Wheaton family join us on pool deck again to present the winner with the trophy.

Check out the George Wheaton BBB page on our website to learn about the story behind this race.

Hail Rex!

Last weekend, after smashing out some wonderful swims at Drummoyne Pool, Rex Wilson headed up river to Homebush to compete in the Metro South West Championships (as part of the MLC Burwood team).

Rex swam superbly again and came home with two gold medals and a bronze.

Upcoming events

Our first social events for the season are coming up in November. Please pencil these dates in to your diary:

  • 9 November | Ladies night out
  • 23 November | Men’s night out

The events will start at 7pm and be held at the R&B Grillhouse on Victoria Road Drummoyne. The R&B Grillhouse is a major sponsor and these events are a great way to show our support and gratitude.

Thanks Noah and Cohen (and Oscar)

Thanks to Noah and Cohen for making tea and coffee for the timekeepers and race officials on Saturday. And thanks to Oscar who graciously helped to wash up the mess.
