Start of swimming season officially delayed…

Pool opening delayed

Sadly, the inevitable has happened and because of the continuing pandemic the regular pool opening date of 1 September has come and gone without a splash.

In recent comments our Club Patron and Mayor, Angelo Tsirekas, lamented the delay but highlighted the importance Council places in keeping the community safe and also advised about the upgrade works that Council was able to undertake over the winter:

“The safety of the community comes first. Although we have had to postpone our eagerly anticipated reopening, during the off season we have been able to complete an exciting program of works at both Drummoyne and Cabarita swimming centres.”

Drummoyne Swimming Centre has received major treatment to the pool deck, grandstand, steel structures, roofs and pool shell, as well as an updated colour scheme to provide a more vibrant look and feel to the facility. It has taken the majority of the off season to grind back and level all floor surfaces, which were finished with a lighter, slip-resistant coating.

How good is Scooter Patterson?

Scooter Patterson wins silver and bronze in Tokyo

At his second Paralympic Games Grant ‘Scooter’ Patterson has taken out Silver and Bronze medals.

Scooter took out Silver in the men’s 50m breastroke after earlier taking bronze in the 150m individual medley SM3 category.

Scooter’s performances are an inspiration to us all as we look forward to getting back in the pool.

2021-2022 Season Update…

Lockdown extended

As you are all no doubt aware, the Sydney lockdown has been extended for another month, so Drummoyne Pool looks unlikely to open in September.

We are planning to start Swim Club on Saturday 9th October 2021, subject to NSW health orders easing by then.

The Club Committee will continue to monitor the situation and will be working to put a revise COVID-safe plan in place ahead of the pool reopening.

We’ll also provide updates about pool opening, squads and racing as more information comes to hand.

The Federal and State Governments are continuing to talk about vaccine passports and we will monitor developments and the potential application to Club activities.

Paralympic Inspiration

The Tokyo Olympics were such a bright spark in the current lockdown, especially the swimmers. And there is still plenty of inspiration on offer with the Paralympics. The achievements of our Paralympians will be mind-blowing and well worth watching. Check out this article and video about our Paralympian swimmers.

Combine time in front of the box with some pre-season training

Paralympics aside, if you feel like you’ve seen everything on Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime, Stan and all the other streaming services and want to start thinking about how you’re going to get back in the pool you might want to check out this short video from Effortless Swimming.

Effortless Swimming run coaching classes in Sydney (when pools are open) and they also have a YouTube channel and podcast. We’ll feature some of their videos over coming weeks to help you get your mind back on the pool.

This video shows 7 ways to help us all get back to peak fitness once pools reopen:

Swim Club Update

COVID-19 and season start

As you probably know the current COVID-19 restrictions are due to be lifted at the end of August. Theoretically, this would mean a normal start to the swimming season might be possible. However, given the current COVID-19 case numbers, it is looking somewhat unlikely that Drummoyne Swimming Centre will re-open on the 1st of September and that we’ll be able to commence our program of activities in the usual fashion.

The club committee will closely monitor government announcements and liaise with Belgravia Leisure and Canada Bay Council about the opening of the pool and what this means for us.

As with last season, we’ll put an appropriate COVID-safe plan in place to ensure the health and well being of our swimmers.

Be assured, we will be looking to commence junior and adult swim squads soon as possible once the pool opens. Lynette and Phil and the other coaches are looking forward to seeing everyone again and to another big season of coaching.

We’ll keep you updated about developments and any schedule changes as they arise. Please keep an eye out for more information in newsletters and posts as well as on the website and TeamApp.

Resources to help you get ready for the start of the season

The current lockdown has played havoc with winter sports and any attempts to undertake pre-season swim training (except for those brave swimmers that took to the chilly waters of Sydney beaches (at least until the 10km rule came in).

It’s certainly going to be a challenge for some of us to get back outside and into the pool once we’re allowed.

You might like to try some of these links for tips and activities to help get you going again:

As you all know, we very successfully supported REACHOUT.COM last summer by swimming in the Laps 4 Life Challenge*. REACHOUT.COM have a range of resources and services related to mental health for young people but have also put together a useful webpage on Coping with Coronavirus.

* We’ve still got a guest appearance from Ian Thorpe to organise. More on that in the not too distant future. And, how good was Ian Thorpe’s commentary at the Olympics. What a legend!

Don’t forget the AGM is scheduled for 23 August 2021

The AGM is coming up on the 23rd of August at 7:30. Please see the specific post about this for more information about dialling in to the meeting.

We’re always keen to see new people get involved and help run the club. There are a few committee members who aren’t standing again this year. So, if you have been thinking about how you can contribute to the successful running of the club please put your hand up and nominate to join the committee.

We’d especially love to see more current parents from Drummoyne Public School and St Mark’s Drummoyne join.

If you want to have a chat about what joining the committee involves (which really isn’t a lot of work because we have such a great group of volunteer helpers) please feel free to contact Adrian on 0424 561 831.

Annual Awards Night guests confirmed: Marieke D’Cruz and Mayor Angelo Tsirekas!

Guests speakers are confirmed for the annual awards night…

Guest speakers at the annual awards night will be our very supportive Club Patron and City of Canada Bay Mayor Angelo Tsirekas and Marieke D’Cruz (nee Guehrer).

We all know and appreciate Mayor Angelo for the support he personally and Council generally provides to the club and it’s great that he is able to join us for the evening.

While Mayor Angelo is a handy swimmer in his own right and a water polo player, Marieke D’Cruz is from a different realm altogether. Marieke travelled the world swimming for Australia picking up many accolades, medals and records along the way. Some of her many achievements include:

  • World Record Holder 50m Butterfly (short course)
  • World Champion 50m Butterfly (2009 Rome World Championships)
  • Commonwealth Games Gold and Silver Medals
  • Competed at the 2004 Athens Olympics
  • Owner of numerous Australian and Commonwealth records

In her spare time Marieke is the President of the Australian Swimmers Association and a consultant at McKinsey & Company.

Marieke is married to Jason D’Cruz who some of you may know as he previously swum at Drummoyne. Jason still holds a number of club records.

Please warmly welcome Mayor Angelo and Heather as well as Marieke, Jason and their daughter Camille on the night.
