Swim Club Update

COVID-19 and season start

As you probably know the current COVID-19 restrictions are due to be lifted at the end of August. Theoretically, this would mean a normal start to the swimming season might be possible. However, given the current COVID-19 case numbers, it is looking somewhat unlikely that Drummoyne Swimming Centre will re-open on the 1st of September and that we’ll be able to commence our program of activities in the usual fashion.

The club committee will closely monitor government announcements and liaise with Belgravia Leisure and Canada Bay Council about the opening of the pool and what this means for us.

As with last season, we’ll put an appropriate COVID-safe plan in place to ensure the health and well being of our swimmers.

Be assured, we will be looking to commence junior and adult swim squads soon as possible once the pool opens. Lynette and Phil and the other coaches are looking forward to seeing everyone again and to another big season of coaching.

We’ll keep you updated about developments and any schedule changes as they arise. Please keep an eye out for more information in newsletters and posts as well as on the website and TeamApp.

Resources to help you get ready for the start of the season

The current lockdown has played havoc with winter sports and any attempts to undertake pre-season swim training (except for those brave swimmers that took to the chilly waters of Sydney beaches (at least until the 10km rule came in).

It’s certainly going to be a challenge for some of us to get back outside and into the pool once we’re allowed.

You might like to try some of these links for tips and activities to help get you going again:

As you all know, we very successfully supported REACHOUT.COM last summer by swimming in the Laps 4 Life Challenge*. REACHOUT.COM have a range of resources and services related to mental health for young people but have also put together a useful webpage on Coping with Coronavirus.

* We’ve still got a guest appearance from Ian Thorpe to organise. More on that in the not too distant future. And, how good was Ian Thorpe’s commentary at the Olympics. What a legend!

Don’t forget the AGM is scheduled for 23 August 2021

The AGM is coming up on the 23rd of August at 7:30. Please see the specific post about this for more information about dialling in to the meeting.

We’re always keen to see new people get involved and help run the club. There are a few committee members who aren’t standing again this year. So, if you have been thinking about how you can contribute to the successful running of the club please put your hand up and nominate to join the committee.

We’d especially love to see more current parents from Drummoyne Public School and St Mark’s Drummoyne join.

If you want to have a chat about what joining the committee involves (which really isn’t a lot of work because we have such a great group of volunteer helpers) please feel free to contact Adrian on 0424 561 831.

The night promises to be a lot of fun. We’ll have:

  • Monster raffle and prizes
  • Games for adults and kids
  • DJ

Invitations with full details will be sent out ahead of the event.

Winter Swim Club

Thanks to everyone who completed the survey about winter swimming at swim club a few weeks back. The results showed that too much swimming is never enough for DSC members.

So, we plan on running 4 x winter swim club meets over the winter period.

As with previous years Winter Swim Club meets are likely to be held at the Riverview College Indoor Pool on Sunday afternoons and will be held once a month from June through to September.

More details will be provided once available.

Former President Tim Doolan and Club Captain Rosie Tunstall at the Riverview Indoor Pool

New Club Constitution

The Club committee has been reviewing our constitution – which is now a little out of date and overdue for a revamp.

David Parker has kindly done the pro bono work and drafted a new document for us.

We’ll be circulating a copy to all members ahead of the Presentation Night which will also act as an extraordinary general meeting.

Members will have the opportunity to vote on adopting the constitution at the event *.

Annual General Meeting

Our Annual General Meeting will be held on Monday the 23rd August 2021. All members are encouraged to attend and participate.

If you are interested in joining the committee or helping out with the running of the club please feel free to contact Adrian Bell on 0424 561 831 in advance of the AGM.

More information about the proposed new constitution and the AGM will follow.

* voting on the constitution may or may not be a pre-requisite to obtaining dessert 🙂

Annual General Meeting – Mon 24 Aug 2020

Annual General Meeting

On behalf of the club committee we hope everyone has been keeping well and fit during the COVID-19 lockdown and re-opening. Let’s hope that the only new waves are water related not virus related.

It’s been great to see members swimming safely in the ocean, estuaries, backyard pools and local pools now that they’ve re-opened.

Annual General Meeting
The club’s AGM is coming up on Monday 24th August at 7: 30pm. Like a lot of other community clubs we will hold the meeting online using Microsoft Teams.

If you wish to attend please contact Tim Doolan for details via president@drummoyneswimclub.com.au.

Also, if you are interested in helping out with the running of the Club or in a committee position please contact Tim about this.

Presentation night

By now we would normally have held the club’s awards presentation night for the 2019/20 season. However, given the present situation we have decided to remove any uncertainty surrounding large gatherings and defer the award of trophies to the beginning of the 2020/21 season, expected to commence in October 2020. We will provide more details in due course.

We welcome new members Michael Donnellan and Annette Jamieson to the Committee. It is great to have some new faces!

The members voted to make long time members Duncan Lyon and Lynette Brown Life Members of the Club.

Duncan Lyon has been associated with club for over 10 years. He was Club President for 7 years and personally built the club’s unique handicap & timing system. Duncan established the Battle on the Bay Swimming Carnival and spent countless hours working behind the scenes to ensure the club meets ran smoothly.

Lynette Brown has been associated with club since 1964 (over 50 years!) and has been an active volunteer for most of that time. She was auditor of club accounts for 25 years and provided numerous personal donations. Lynette is also a strong supporter of our young swimmers and their swimming development.

Lynette Brown and Duncan Lyon

The Committee report for the 2016/17 season was tabled, listing the many achievements during the year and once again thanking the the wonderful volunteers and supporters of the Club.

The new season swim meet calendar of events has been confirmed and can be seen here.

Although Swimming NSW’s has increased its association fees again this year, the members voted to leave our membership fees as the same as last year.

The attendees also discussed the importance of building membership and decided this will be a focus in the coming season.
