This is a general reminder to all swimmers that member registration is open for Season 2020/21.
We’ve had good numbers register so far but need to close the gap between swimmers and members and we need all active swimmers to register. Registration fees go a good way to funding the Club’s activities, so please help us continue to provide a fun and positive environment for everyone by joining up as soon as you can.
We appreciate that Swim Central has been difficult to use in the past (that’s probably the most diplomatic thing to say about it…) and that it often takes more than one or two attempts to successfully register. If you have any issues or questions, please contact our Club Registrar, Michael Donnellan on registrar@drummoyneswimclub.com.au or mobile 0422 453 322.
Please note that swimmers must be registered in order to be eligible for awards and trophies at the end of the season. So, don’t cost yourself or your squid points. Register now!
This week we have another packed schedule of swimming.
Championship Series – Week 1
First up we have the first week of the Championship season, starting with the 50m Freestyle event. For Championship races there are no handicap starts – everyone starts off “Go”, so the fastest person in each age group will win the event. To read more about the Championship events and racing format, click here.
Point Score Handicap Events
Following the Championship event (which is always held first each Saturday), we will resume our point score handicapped races with 100m Backstroke Handicap.
The distance event this week is the 200m Individual Medley Handicap featuring the Finals of the Five Dock Rotary Perpetual Trophy event.
The finalists for the big race are as follows:

Continuation of our 2019-20 Trophy and Medal Presentations
In between races we’ll continue our trophy and medal presentations to recognise the achievements of our swimmers in the 2019-20 season. This week we’ll be presenting to our younger swimmers – those aged U6 to U12 last season. Please refer to the post about trophies and medals for more information.
As many of you are aware EPIC Pizza have closed their Drummoyne Store. This is unfortunate on many levels – unfortunate for those working there who have lost their jobs, unfortunate for those of us who loved their Pizzas (the Leonardo Di Capricciosa was my favourite) and unfortunate for Swim Club because they have been a supportive sponsor for a few years now.
In light of this and due to scheduling conflicts for some swimmers we’ve decided to postpone the junior swimmer Pizza in the Park event that was to be held this Saturday evening.
We’ll reschedule another social event for later in the season.
Apologies to anyone who has to now change their plans.
The t-shirts funded by our new sponsor Inspirations Paint arrived last week and most have been handed out to the first 50 junior swimmers who registered (if you received an email about this but your child hasn’t received theirs yet please come to the table at on the upper grand stand area this Saturday).
Thanks again to Alfio and Katia Arlotta at Inspirations Paint for their generous support.
If you have a painting project please head up to the store on the corner of Lyons Road and Russell Street, opposite Brent Street. Alfio or Katia will look after you with the right advice and competitive prices.
To encourage swimmers to support Inspirations Paint we’re running a competition. The first junior swimmer that can name Alfio and Katia’s dog and spell out the story behind the name will win a new pair of goggles.
Inspirations Paint Dog Name Guessing Competition – visit the store to learn Alfio and Katia’s marvelous dog’s name and win a pair of goggles!
Alfio and Katia’s brown spotted dalmatian
Alfio and Katia Arlotta own a marvelous brown spotted dalmatian called… The first junior swimmer who can name the dog and tell me the story behind the name will win a new pair of Zoggs goggles. So you can guess and try your luck or head up to the store to make a purchase and ask Alfio or Katia.
This coming Saturday we’ll be handing out Championship and Point Score Trophies and medals for U6 to U12 age groups. The swimmers listed below are up for awards so please make sure you’re at swim club to pick up your prize.

This week the highlight of swim club will be one of our most popular and important trophy races – the George Wheaton 50m BBB Handicap race. As we had so many entries and heats this year, we will hold two semi-finals before the final.
We usually have a large representation from the Wheaton family on deck to present the trophy. Unfortunately, this year due to COVID and an unwell family member this won’t be possible this season. We wish the family well during a difficult time and hope to see them again next season.
The qualifiers for the George Wheaton 50m BBB Handicap Trophy Event to be decided by two semi-finals followed by a final on 21 November 2020 are as follows:

Ladies social night
At the time of writing there were still a few spots available for the ladies social night at Ribs & Burgers. If you want to go along please jump on to the Team App application and go to the Events section to find the details and indicate you are going.
Trophies and Medals
We will continue with the presentation of trophies and medals from last season for Championships and Point Score events from next week and complete the presentations over two weeks. We have a Special Guest presenter scheduled to come along on the 5th of December – more details to follow.
Congratulations to the Barbarians – winners of the inaugural Mayor’s Canada Bay Cup!
Well done to the Barbarians – the out of towners – who took out the inaugural Mayor’s Canada Bay Cup.
A special thanks to Mayor Angelo Tsirekas for bringing good weather back to swim club and being on hand to present the trophy to the winning team. Names of the winners and the Mayor will be engraved on the trophy.
There was a slight mix up with the handicap and lane allocation but the Barbarians swam really well and are deserving winners.
The challenge is now for one of the suburbs in the LGA to take back the cup next season.

Michael will be back on pool deck on the 29th November so if you’re still having troubles with the system go and see him then.
Please note that swimmers must be registered in order to be eligible for awards and trophies at the end of the season.
We’ve got a huge morning of swimming this Saturday with the highlight being our inaugural Canada Bay Cup relay. Mayor Angelo Tsirekas will be in attendance to present the Cup. We’ll also be handing out perpetual trophies to last season’s winners. Our very generous Gold Sponsor Gladys Mallqui of Veeva Property Group will be on deck to hand out trophies. On top of that we’ve got the the Final of the Geoff Roper 200m Handicap Freestyle trophy race, a monster raffle, 50m Freestyle and 100m butterfly…
The order of the morning will be:
50m Freestyle
100m Butterfly
200m Freestyle including the Final of the Geoff Roper Handicap Trophy Race. (see below for a list of finalists)
The Canada Bay Cup (timing TBC but likely after Butterfly and before 200m Freestyle)
Canada Bay Cup Relay
The “Canada Bay Cup” – is our new relay in which residents of the various suburbs in the Canada Bay Local Government Area (LGA) will square off against each other to see which is the fastest suburb.
As noted above, our Club Patron Mayor Angelo Tsirekas will be attending to present the trophy to the winning team.
Please complete the form at the end of this link https://forms.gle/uV8MBsqXagQGVhT5A to nominate for the Canada Bay Cup – nominate the suburb you live in. Please complete the form for each person you are entering for.
Please nominate by COB Thursday to allow teams to be formed. The number of participants will be determined from the entries received. We’ll also field a relay team from out of LGA swimmers.
Final of the Geoff Roper 200m Freestyle Handicap Trophy Race
We were unable to hold our annual awards ceremony earlier this year. However, it is still important that we recognise the achievements and efforts of our swimmers for last season.
Some of you may have noticed a procession of little people carrying big trophies from the car park to the club room last Saturday. This little parade was the club’s newly engraved perpetual trophies, keepsake trophies and medals making their way back home in advance of them being awarded.
Presentations are still discouraged under COVID rules so instead we’ll be handing out trophies and medals on the pool deck over a number of weeks starting from this Saturday the 14th of November.
We’ll start with the presentation of the club’s perpetual trophies.
If you are one of the people listed in the table below make sure you come along this Saturday to be recognised for your wonderful achievement.
The provision of trophies is a great way to recognise the outstanding efforts of our swimmers. The club would not be able to do this without the generous and continuing support of Gladys Mallqui and Veeva Property Group. Gladys will be on deck this Saturday to help present the trophies. Please make sure you say hello and show thanks to Gladys for her support.
Please also keep Veeva Property Group in mind if you need property services – selling property, buying property, wanting to rent your place out or even if you want some property styling advice. Veeva Property Group offer a range of services. Look them up or follow the link from the club’s newsletter or online.
