Week 17: Championships, Finals and the Battle on the Bay!

Well done to all the brave peeps who braved the elements and the 400m Championship last week. As too much swimming is never enough this week we have another action packed meet. And then, to top it off, we the have the Battle of the Bay at the new Ashfield pool. Rest up this week to save your energy for this high weekend of swimming!

Congratulations to last week’s Championship and Bill Gallie Handicap race winners

First up, congratulations to the winners of our 400m Championship races – Natalie Borozan and Matthew Svoboda and to Evelyn Kerr who took out the prestigious Bill Gallie 50m Breaststroke Handicap Trophy Final.

This week’s events

Our first event this Saturday will be the 100m Freestyle Championship race.

For our second event this week we have another one of our premiere trophy races – the Tom Brown 50m Backstroke Handicap Final. We have a young field who’ll be fighting it out to receive the trophy from an extended posse from the Brown clan. The Tom Brown Final will be followed by 50m, 30m and 20m backstroke events as usual.

To round out the morning’s swimming we have the 200m Medley along with 4 x 30m and 4 x 20m medleys.

Battle on the Bay – 100 DSC Entrants!

If you feel like you’ve been bombarded with emails and news posts about the Battle on the Bay you’ll be glad to know that it has finally arrived.

This year we have 100 entrants. This is quite an achievement for a family swimming club without an associated swim school or competitive squad program. Good on you all for getting on board with what will be a really fun day.

Please check the recent emails to ensure you are up to speed with both your own events and the order of the day’s activities. Please also check out if you or one of your squids has been put into a relay team.

We will need to provide time keepers for 2 lanes during the event. We will need volunteers to help with this.

Lastly don’t forget to rest your tonsils in readiness to cheer our swimmers home to glorious victories.

With a bit of luck it might be Drummoyne receiving the Battle on the Bay trophy this year!

Week 15: Butterfly Championships and 100m/200m Freestyle Handicap races!

Hopefully you are all recovering well from last week’s medley mayhem. Because we know you can never get enough butterfly it’s time for some more… This week our races are:

  • Championship – 100m Butterfly
  • 100m Freestyle, including Week 4 of the 100m Freestyle Special Events (Molly Wark & Les Henry Under 10’s and 35 and Overs)
  • 200m Freestyle
Drummoyne Swimming Club swimmer Marieke D’Cruz (née Guehrer)

A Look ahead…

As you know we’ve got the 2021 Battle on the Bay coming up on the 20th of February. That’s our chance to come together as a club and show our neighbouring clubs just what we’re about by knocking Leichhardt off the top of the leader board and having “Drummoyne” inscribed on the trophy.

Following on from the Battle on the Bay we’ve got a few other initiatives planned, including:

The Canada Bay Club All School Relay – This new relay will be held on the 27th of February 21 and we’ll put out some information about, this starting next week. The trophy for this race is dedicated to the Canada Bay Club – one of our great supporters over the years.

The Food Bank Raffle – As some of you may remember last season we donated the proceeds of one of our raffles to support Bush Fire relief. We’re looking to continue that concept again this season. As a club we’re going to support Food Bank.

The proceeds from our raffle on the 27th of February will be donated to Food Bank to support the work they are doing fighting hunger.

Did you know that: three in ten Australians now experiencing food insecurity had not gone hungry before the pandemic and that young people – Gen Z are being hardest hit by the impact of COVID-19.

Foodbank is addressing this crisis by supplying more food and groceries than ever before to charities for distribution to vulnerable people.

As a second charitable initiative, we’re proposing to get involved with Laps for Life in support of youth mental health – Laps for Life is a swimming challenge that raises money to support youth mental health initiatives by Reachout.com.

We’ll set a club challenge and, over the course of March, use Adult and Junior Squads to meet our collective goal. Swimmers will be asked to seek donations from friends and family along the way.

More information about both these charitable initiatives will be forthcoming in the next few weeks.

Missed races means loss of Club points!

The carnival will run from 3pm to 7.30pm, with events run in the following order, by gender and age group:

  • Freestyle (50m, 30m, 20m)
  • Butterfly (50m, 30m, 20m)
  • Backstroke (50m, 30m, 20m)
  • Breaststroke (50m, 30m, 20m)
  • 4x50m relays (50m, 30m, 20m)
  • 10x50m relay (50m, 30m, 20m)

Everyone who enters and swims in a race will win points for the Club. The higher you finish in your event, the more points you will earn!

However, if you enter a race but DO NOT SWIM, you will LOSE points for the Club!! So it’s important that you are available to swim every race that you enter. In the past, we have lost the carnival because we’ve had so many empty Drummoyne lanes, which is very disappointing for the other Club swimmers who have participated.

If you plan to leave the carnival early (before 7.30pm) or expect to arrive late (after 3pm) then please DO NOT ENTER events that you are likely to miss. For example, if you don’t expect to arrive until 4pm, then please don’t enter the Freestyle or Butterfly events as you will likely miss your races and lose points for the Club.

Drummoyne Wins 5 Gold Medals in Battle!

Some tremendous individual performances saw Drummoyne Swimming Club swimmers win 5 Age Group Championships at the 2020 Battle on the Bay, together with another seven top 3 positions.

Congratulations to our individual medal winners Andrew Sharpe, Audrey Allan, Christian Taylor, Gabrielle Perkins, Hayden Howard, Isabelle Kerr, Jacob Johnstone, Kellen Parker, Lily Borozan, Mary-Lou Doolan, Skye Lewis, Will Howard and Ziani Viola for their impressive all-round swimming results.

All of our Drummoyne swimmers clubbed together to achieve the second highest point score across the four competing clubs, with the highest average point score going to Leichhardt Swimming Club, crowning them as winners of the 2020 Battle on the Bay Club trophy.

The highlights of the evening were the relay events at the end of the carnival, with Drummoyne dominating in the 11-12 and 13-14 year old mixed 4x50m relays and narrowly missing out by a split second in an exhilarating 10x50m that chopped and changed with every lap!

The full results of the 2020 Battle on the Bay are available here.

A big thank you to Leichhardt Swimming Club for successfully hosting this year’s event with entries for 289 swimmers. It’s gratifying to see the on-going success of the carnival in its 11th year, after it was initiated and first hosted by Drummoyne Swimming Club in 2010.

We look forward to taking up the battle again next year, which Ashfield has tentatively offered to host in their brand new swimming facility, which is currently under construction and due to open in August 2020.

Battle on the Bay Carnival – Sat 22 Feb 20

Only three more weeks to train up for the 2020 Battle on the Bay – a fun swimming carnival between Drummoyne and our neighbouring swim clubs – to be held at 3pm on Saturday 22nd February 2020 at Leichhardt Pool!

Drummoyne will be competing against Ashfield, Enfield and Leichhardt Swimming Clubs to determine the fastest Club on the Bay! Every swimmer will earn valuable points for their Club in the fight for the Battle on the Bay Trophy. The fastest individual swimmers will be awarded Age Group medals.

The relay events are always a highlight, particularly the thrilling 10x50m Freestyle relay between the fastest swimmers in each club!

Swim Club will be on as usual at 7.30am that morning and the Carnival will start promptly at 3pm on Saturday 22nd February 2020, finishing at 7.30pm.

Entries are $6 per person. We will be collecting entries and fees on Saturday mornings at the pool, so please bring along cash to pay.

You can choose to race Freestyle, Breaststroke, Backstroke and Butterfly.:

  • Under 6’s will race a 20m distance.
  • 7-8 year olds will race 30m in all strokes but, for Freestyle, can choose to race 50m instead of 30m.
  • All other age groups will race a 50m distance in each stroke.

Drummoyne Swimming Club initiated the Battle on the Bay back in 2010 as a competition between neighbouring swimming clubs located around and nearby the Iron Cove Bay area. The Carnival has been a huge success and is now into its 11th year!

Further information about this year’s Carnival can be found here. We look forward to our Club members joining in to help us win the ultimate prize – the Battle on the Bay Trophy!

The Carnival was topped off with a crushing win by our 10x50m relay team, beating Leichhardt by 20 seconds, with our ‘B’ team close behind.

Olympian James Magnussen was a great sport by racing with the “Little Battlers” 10x50m relay team. I’m sure it’s an experience that the 9-10 year old’s in his team will remember for the rest of their lives, including Marcus Svoboda and Henry Garvey from Drummoyne!

We’re very proud of the massive effort put in by all of our swimmers, with many swimming Personal Best (PB) times, which can be seen by comparing ‘final’ times to ‘seed’ times in the detailed results.
