Last Swim Club before Xmas!

Santa Claus and a BBQ breakfast

This Saturday is our last Swim Club meet before we take a short break for Christmas and the New Year celebrations.  If we’re lucky Santa will pay us a visit and dish out some Christmas Cheer! We’re also planning a bacon and egg BBQ breakfast. It promises to be a great morning.

It would be great to see as many swimmers as possible. Please encourage those swimmers who have been staying at home to keep warm and dry to come along – after a very wet season so far the BOM is predicting a lovely day with a top of 29.

BOM forecast – likely to be the best Saturday morning of the season so far…

Hopefully Santa doesn’t get too hot in his red suit.

The George Wheaton BBB trophy visits Canberra!

Don Erickson BBB winner from 1944/45

You may recall a post from earlier in the season about the club being contacted recently by Don Erickson who won the George Wheaton BBB trophy in 1944/45. Don’s family were amongst the very early Drummoyne Amateur Swimming Club members and keen swimmers and water polo players.

Don, who is now 91 years young, lives in Canberra and doesn’t get up to Sydney often. But, as chance would have it, the U14 Drummoyne Devils team played a tournament in Canberra last weekend. Jessica Bell, club swimmer and Devil in disguise took the opportunity to reunite the trophy with one of its very early winners.

Don was excited to to see the trophy and Don and his wife Margaret hosted Jessica and Debbie for afternoon tea. Turns out Don and Margaret both went to Russell Lea Infants School.

Thanks to this season’s winner, Felix Sharp, for kindly giving up the Trophy for a week and allowing it to travel to Canberra.

Week 8: Butterfly Championship and George Russell 400m Freestyle Heats!

After a delayed start, the first half of the season has flown by and there are just two weeks to go before we break for Christmas and new year. If we’ve all been good Santa Claus might come and visit us next week. But first…

50m Butterfly Championship

We start with the 50m Butterfly Championship event. For Championship races there are no handicap starts – everyone starts off “Go”. The fastest person in each age group wins.

To read more about the Championship events and racing format, click here.

100m Freestyle

Following the Butterfly Championship races we’ll get back to the handicap racing. This week the youngsters (under 10s) will be competing in the Molly Wark & Les Henry U/10 100m Freestyle handicap races (Week 2) and the not so young will be competing for the Over 35 Handicap points and bragging rights.

George Russell 400m Freestyle Handicap Heats

Following the 100m Freestyle races we’ll have the heats for the George Russell 400m Freestyle (Handicap). Note that everyone who currently has a 200m freestyle time is eligible to compete in the George Russell heats – no need for your 200m time to be less than 200 seconds, which is the normal entry criteria. If you haven’t swum a 400m race before, we will calculate your handicap time for the 400m heats based on your current 200m time. The final for this trophy event is the 23rd January 2022 leaving plenty of time to improve and give yourself a chance at the trophy.

Last week’s medley winner

A big shout out to Erica Bhatti who won the Five Dock Rotary 200m Individual Medley Handicap trophy. Erica held off a fast finishing Matthew Svoboda and Ian Allen. Erica’s time was a 20 second personal best. Well done Erica!

Week 6: The George Wheaton BBB Final and the Canada Bay Cup

This week we have a big program of events to get through, with two trophies on offer – the prestigious George Wheaton BBB Trophy and the Mayor’s Canada Bay Cup. As well as these two trophy races, we have the 100m Freestyle, 50m Breaststroke and the 400m Freestyle events.

George Wheaton BBB Final

The BBB is a unique race in which the competitors race against each other swimming their favourite “B” stroke – Breaststroke, Backstroke or Butterfly!

The race is named in honour of George Wheaton – a former secretary of Drummoyne Swimming Club who tragically died after racing his four sons in a “Father and Son” race at the Club in 1937. The trophy was inaugurated in the 1939-40 season and is one of the Clubs most sought after prizes. Wheaton family members will join us pool side for the final.

The finalists for the George Wheaton 50m BBB Handicap and their nominated strokes are as follows:

Canada Bay Cup

Election campaigning schedule permitting, our Club Patron Mayor Angelo Tsirekas will join us for the Canada Bay Cup this coming Saturday. This will be the second time we’ve run this relay and we’re hoping a team from within the LGA will take out the trophy this season.

The “Canada Bay Cup” is a race in which residents of the various suburbs in the Canada Bay LGA will square off against each other to see which is the fastest suburb. This relay race will be held on Saturday the 27th of November 2021 at Swim Club. The format is a mixed handicap relay. The number of participants will be determined from the entries received. We’ll also field a relay team of swimmers from outside of the LGA.

To enter the Canada Bay Cup please enter your name and suburb using this link.

In this picture, which was found in our recent working bee, Angelo is posing with the Drummoyne Swimming Club relay team that competed at a carnival at Homebush.
