Reminder about Adult Squads – Monday, Wednesday and Friday

Just a reminder that the club runs Adult Squads on Mondays, Wednesday and Fridays.

Squads start at 6:00 am on Monday and Wednesday and 5:30 am on Fridays for those early birds who want to get in some extra training before racing on Saturday.

Squads are in Lane 1 and 2.

It would be good to see a few more swimmers on Mondays and Wednesdays in particular.

Junior squads are Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6:00 am.

Costume order from Delfina

We’re placing an order with our costume supplier Delfina and need to confirm order numbers for costumes. So, if you are in the market for a new costume please read on…

The options are:
– Boys / Mens swim brief ($45)
– Boy’s / Mens jammer ($50)
– Girls / Ladies Open Back costume ($65)

A few things to note:

We need to order a minimum of 5 x pieces per costume. If we don’t make the minimum quota for any particular style we’ll be in touch to discuss an alternative.

Be sure to check out the size guide before making your selection as we are placing a special order and returns to Delfina will not be possible. We’ll try and arrange to on sell the garment to another club member if possible.

Note that experience from our first order suggests that sizing is on the small side (ladies costumes in particular). So go for a bigger size if you’re not sure. For certainty, talk to a club member who has a costume about sizing or check out the stock that we hold at a Saturday race.

Club Captain Nominations

This Saturday we’ll be calling for nominations for Club Captains for the 2020/21 season. Club Captains are a fundamental part of the Club and valued by all members.

The key responsibilities of the Club Captains include:

Attendance – Regular attendance every Saturday.
Assistance – Regularly assists to help run races very Saturday morning. Arrives on time to help set up and stays to help pack up.
Role model – Acts responsibly and is a role model for all DSC Juniors.
Battle on the Bay (BOB) – Assists in all facets of BOB including organising juniors in their heats and relays. Masters of the cheerleading.

Thanks very much to Cara Parker and Joseph Colley who were our Club Captains for last season.

Canada Bay Cup and School Battle Relays

Relays are always a highlight of school swimming carnivals, the annual Battle on the Bay and those other lesser swim meets like the Olympics. So, this season we are looking to introduce two new relay races into the swimming calendar:

  • The “Canada Bay Cup” – a race in which residents of the various suburbs in the Canada Bay LGA will square off against each other to see which is the fastest suburb. This relay race will be held in the first half of the season and we currently seeking confirmation that Mayor Angelo Tsirekas will attend and present the trophy (and hopefully swim!)

  • The “Battle of the Schools” – kids and adults will race against each other to see which is the fastest school in the club.

More information about these events will be forthcoming in coming weeks.

The season has officially launched

Last Saturday we had another beautiful morning at Swim Club for our official season launch. Thanks very much to Fiona Martin MP for attending and marking the start of the season with us.

We’ve had very solid attendance for the first two swims and with school holidays over we hope to see a few more returning families this week. Please don’t forget to tell your friends about swim club and invite them to come down for a free trial.

This week’s races are:

  • 50m Freestyle
  • 50m Butterfly
  • 200m Medley

Junior Squad Coaches Wanted – Free Training Provided!

Think you can become a supercoach like Brant Best who coached James Magnussen to two World Championships?

The club is looking to develop coaches from within our ranks to help with our junior squads. To this end, the Club was successful in obtaining a Commonwealth Government Community Volunteer Grant earlier this year.

The grant will fund an introductory coaching course for 2 club members.

The expectation is that on completion of the training the newly qualified coaches will help run the junior squads on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Squad coaches are paid for their time.

This opportunity is open to all club members over 16 years of age and would ideally be suited to someone who wants to give something back to the Club and pick up a new qualification that they can also use to obtain other employment.

If you are interested in this opportunity please contact Adrian Bell or Phil Haywood for more information.
