Junior Squads start back Tuesday 21st January

Junior Squads will start back up again on Tuesday 21st January 2020.

Squads are held in Lanes 1 & 2 every Tuesday and Thursday morning from 6am-7am coached by Phil, Lynette, Maddie and Sarah.

Junior squads are free for our junior members (6yrs upwards including parents) with your swim club membership. Junior squads are open to children who can swim at least 50 metres freestyle. It’s a great way for juniors to keep fit, train for our Saturday morning meets and improve for upcoming school carnivals.

Adults can improve their fitness too with Senior Squad on Monday and Wednesday from 6am-7am and on Friday at 5.30am.

Swim Club starts again Sat 18th Jan

Welcome to 2020 everyone.  We hope everyone had a restful and enjoyable Christmas / New Year break. Swim Club returns this Saturday morning starting at 7:30am sharp.

To support our fellow country men, women and children we will be donating all raffle proceeds to those impacted by the awful bushfires.  Please buy as many raffles tickets as you can on Saturday morning!

A big program this week:

  • 50m, 30m and 20m freestyle
  • 100m, 50m, 30m and 20m butterfly
  • 200m, 4x30m and 4x20m freestyle

And that’s a wrap for 2019…

We had our last swim meet for 2019 on Saturday 14th December.  It was a fun-filled day celebrating Christmas together with the Christmas BBQ, a visit from Santa and lolly bags for the kids. We’d like to thank all the volunteers who helped on the day.

We’re looking forward to a big second half season, with point scores going to the wire, social events, Battle in the Bay and starting back Sat 18th Jan 2020.

On behalf of the Swim Club Committee we wish all swimmers and their families a safe and relaxing Christmas, Happy New Year, and to keep up the swimming!

PS. If anyone lost a diamond earring on Saturday 7th December 2019, please contact Tim Doolan on president@drummoyneswimclub.com.au with details.

Meet a Volunteer – Matthew O’Connor

For this week’s article on getting to know our club volunteers, we interviewed our very own Life Member and club Marshall, Matt O’Connor.

Q: Matt – how many years have you been a club member?

A: About 15 years

Q: What motivates you to volunteer each week?

A: I am the club Marshall (the person who gets the swimmers in place for the upcoming races). Why – it’s a role that needs to be done otherwise, on a busy day, we would run out of time and get booted out of our lanes.

Q: What is your favourite memory?

A: Having 3 of my 4 kids swim with me for over 4 or so seasons.

Q: What’s the best thing about Swim Club?

A: I enjoy watching the kids grow into young adults and am impressed with the number of them taking a role in the running of the club – stand in starters, running the box so efficiently, timekeeping and the like.

Q: What is your favourite stroke?

A: Breaststroke.

Q: Who is your favourite swimmer?

A: Kieran Perkins. His win from lane 8 – the slowest qualifier – at the 1996 1500m final showed what a determined and tough guy he is – it is a lesson for everyone to keep pushing yourself even if you aren’t considered to be in the running.

Q: What is the next PB (Personal Best time) you are aiming for?

A: Not drowning before the season is over.

Q: Do you have any tips for other swimmers?

A: “Keep kicking!!!”

Matt is a very valued and respected volunteer and we couldn’t run Saturday swim club without him. We really appreciate your hard work and assistance. Thank you from all of us at DSC 😊

Ho! Ho! Ho! Christmas Meet This Saturday!

Dress in your festive best and join us for some Christmas fun this Saturday!

We will have some free Christmas snags on BBQ and, if the children are good, we’re hoping that Santa will pay us a visit!

We will also be holding a GIANT Christmas raffle that’s not to be missed, so bring along some ticket money!

Our swimming program this Saturday is as follows:

  • 50m, 30m, 20m Breaststroke Championship
  • 50m, 30m, 20m Freestyle
  • 200m, 4x30m, 4x20m Freestyle

Men’s night out shenanigans!

Some of our Club’s menfolk and their family/friends had a fun night out at Ribs & Burgers (our Major Gold Sponsor) for their yearly social catch up.

From all reports, the food was sensational. The men who were game enough to take on the baby pork and beef ribs were not disappointed – the best ribs our President has ever had!

Our restaurant host, Phil, kindly provided a welcome drink to the boys, on the house.

A fun evening for all, connecting with new and existing members over a drink and a meal. It was rumoured the Oxford Hotel was revisited afterwards, to discuss swimming techniques in further detail!

Junior Squads – last day Tuesday 17 Dec 19

Junior Squads will wrap up for the year on Tuesday 17th December 2019. They will resume when school returns on Tuesday 28th January 2020.

Junior squads are held in Lanes 1 & 2 every Tuesday and Thursday morning from 6am-7am coached by Phil, Lynette, Maddie and Sarah.

Junior squads are free for our junior members (6yrs upwards including parents) with your swim club membership. Junior squads are open to children who can swim at least 50 metres freestyle. It’s a great way for juniors to keep fit, train for Saturday morning meets and improve for upcoming school carnivals.

Meet a Volunteer – Duncan Lyon

Duncan Lyon

For this week’s article on getting to know our club volunteers, we interviewed Life Member, Race Secretary and former Club President, Duncan Lyon.

Q: Duncan – how many years have you been a club member?

A: I first brought my three daughters down to swim at the club in 2006, 13 years ago.

Having grown up in England, I wasn’t a very strong swimmer and had absolutely no intention of racing myself. However, it’s such a welcoming and supportive club that I was persuaded to jump in at the deep end and, after lots of encouragement, I now swim most days of the week!

Q: What motivates you to volunteer each week?

A: Primarily because I enjoy spending Saturday mornings down at such a beautiful pool with my family and a great community of swimmers and I would like to see this successful and historic club continue for many years to come.

I’ve gained a lot of satisfaction in applying my skills to automate races on Saturday mornings and in promoting the Club to new members through our web site and social media during my seven years as Club President and four years as Race Secretary.

Q: What is your favourite memory?

A: Winning the largest trophy at the club in my first season – the Tom Williams 50m Freestyle Handicap!

Never in my wildest dreams as a child in England would I have contemplated winning a trophy at one of the oldest swimming clubs in Australia!

Q: What’s the best thing about Swim Club?

A: The handicap racing format gives everyone a chance to win and makes the club very family-friendly. It’s one of the few sporting clubs in the world where children can race their parents and grandparents every week, with all of them striving to beat each other!

Q: What is your favourite stroke?

A: My most competitive stroke is breaststroke.

In my entire time at the club I have only ever scored a single point in the Club Championships (where there are no handicap starts) and it was in breaststroke!

Q: Who is your favourite swimmer?

A: Australia has lots of talented swimmers, so it’s hard to pick, but one of the gutsiest swims I remember watching was Kieren Perkins win gold in the 1500m freestyle at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta from lane 8, after nearly missing the final due to illness.

Q: What is the next PB (Personal Best time) you are aiming for?

A: I recently attended a swimming clinic which made major improvements to my stroke, taking 20 seconds off my 200m freestyle time! My goal is to qualify for the 400m freestyle by swimming 200m in less than 200 seconds. I’m still some way off but am newly motivated to get there!

Q: Do you have any tips for other swimmers?

A: I’d highly recommend that juniors and seniors attend morning squads. It’s free for members and a great way of maintaining your fitness and endurance for Saturday races.

Other than that, my tip is not to take a swimming tip from a Pommy!
