Week 15: Butterfly Championships and 100m/200m Freestyle Handicap races!

Hopefully you are all recovering well from last week’s medley mayhem. Because we know you can never get enough butterfly it’s time for some more… This week our races are:

  • Championship – 100m Butterfly
  • 100m Freestyle, including Week 4 of the 100m Freestyle Special Events (Molly Wark & Les Henry Under 10’s and 35 and Overs)
  • 200m Freestyle
Drummoyne Swimming Club swimmer Marieke D’Cruz (née Guehrer)

A Look ahead…

As you know we’ve got the 2021 Battle on the Bay coming up on the 20th of February. That’s our chance to come together as a club and show our neighbouring clubs just what we’re about by knocking Leichhardt off the top of the leader board and having “Drummoyne” inscribed on the trophy.

Following on from the Battle on the Bay we’ve got a few other initiatives planned, including:

The Canada Bay Club All School Relay – This new relay will be held on the 27th of February 21 and we’ll put out some information about, this starting next week. The trophy for this race is dedicated to the Canada Bay Club – one of our great supporters over the years.

The Food Bank Raffle – As some of you may remember last season we donated the proceeds of one of our raffles to support Bush Fire relief. We’re looking to continue that concept again this season. As a club we’re going to support Food Bank.

The proceeds from our raffle on the 27th of February will be donated to Food Bank to support the work they are doing fighting hunger.

Did you know that: three in ten Australians now experiencing food insecurity had not gone hungry before the pandemic and that young people – Gen Z are being hardest hit by the impact of COVID-19.

Foodbank is addressing this crisis by supplying more food and groceries than ever before to charities for distribution to vulnerable people.

As a second charitable initiative, we’re proposing to get involved with Laps for Life in support of youth mental health – Laps for Life is a swimming challenge that raises money to support youth mental health initiatives by Reachout.com.

We’ll set a club challenge and, over the course of March, use Adult and Junior Squads to meet our collective goal. Swimmers will be asked to seek donations from friends and family along the way.

More information about both these charitable initiatives will be forthcoming in the next few weeks.

Missed races means loss of Club points!

The carnival will run from 3pm to 7.30pm, with events run in the following order, by gender and age group:

  • Freestyle (50m, 30m, 20m)
  • Butterfly (50m, 30m, 20m)
  • Backstroke (50m, 30m, 20m)
  • Breaststroke (50m, 30m, 20m)
  • 4x50m relays (50m, 30m, 20m)
  • 10x50m relay (50m, 30m, 20m)

Everyone who enters and swims in a race will win points for the Club. The higher you finish in your event, the more points you will earn!

However, if you enter a race but DO NOT SWIM, you will LOSE points for the Club!! So it’s important that you are available to swim every race that you enter. In the past, we have lost the carnival because we’ve had so many empty Drummoyne lanes, which is very disappointing for the other Club swimmers who have participated.

If you plan to leave the carnival early (before 7.30pm) or expect to arrive late (after 3pm) then please DO NOT ENTER events that you are likely to miss. For example, if you don’t expect to arrive until 4pm, then please don’t enter the Freestyle or Butterfly events as you will likely miss your races and lose points for the Club.

Week 14: Backstroke Championship plus you won’t want to miss the 400m Individual Medley!

Well I hope you didn’t melt on Australia Day! After a short reprieve, it looks to be heating up again for Saturday, although we might be in for a damp morning.

The morning will start off with the 50m Backstroke Championship events as our form stroke.

Following the Championships, our sprint event is the 50m Freestyle.

Finally our distance event is the 400m Individual Medley (plus shorter medley races for those who want to do them).

Congratulations to our George Russell 400m Handicap Final Winner and our Bill Gallie 50m Breaststroke Finalists

Congratulations to Lukas Taylor for taking out the George Russell 400m Freestyle Handicap trophy race last weekend. Lukas continues the tradition set by his older brothers and add the Taylor family name to another trophy. Let’s see if Lukas can back it up with the 400m Championship race next month.

Congratulations also to those that qualified for the Bill Gallie 50m Breaststroke Handicap Final. You’ve got a few weeks to continue your breaststroke training – with the final set for Feb 13.

Good luck at school, kids!

Best of luck for the first days back at school to those swimmers who start this week.
