Thanks for your bushfire donations!

After a devastating holiday break that was tarnished by bushfire destruction, we were thankful for some long-awaited rain that held off for our first meet back.

We had a great turnout and the pool was a perfect temperature. Some of our brave (crazy) swimmers even tackled the 100m Butterfly for more of a challenge!

Everyone dug deep to buy raffle tickets, with all proceeds being donated to BlazeAid. BlazeAid is assisting rural families impacted by the recent bushfires by providing volunteers and materials to rebuild fences on properties. Their base camps also help rebuild these affected communities.

The club raised a total of $234.30 that was donated to BlazeAid, and gratefully acknowledged by the organisation. Thank you to everyone for their generosity.

Junior Squads start back Tuesday 21st January

Junior Squads will start back up again on Tuesday 21st January 2020.

Squads are held in Lanes 1 & 2 every Tuesday and Thursday morning from 6am-7am coached by Phil, Lynette, Maddie and Sarah.

Junior squads are free for our junior members (6yrs upwards including parents) with your swim club membership. Junior squads are open to children who can swim at least 50 metres freestyle. It’s a great way for juniors to keep fit, train for our Saturday morning meets and improve for upcoming school carnivals.

Adults can improve their fitness too with Senior Squad on Monday and Wednesday from 6am-7am and on Friday at 5.30am.

Swim Club starts again Sat 18th Jan

Welcome to 2020 everyone.  We hope everyone had a restful and enjoyable Christmas / New Year break. Swim Club returns this Saturday morning starting at 7:30am sharp.

To support our fellow country men, women and children we will be donating all raffle proceeds to those impacted by the awful bushfires.  Please buy as many raffles tickets as you can on Saturday morning!

A big program this week:

  • 50m, 30m and 20m freestyle
  • 100m, 50m, 30m and 20m butterfly
  • 200m, 4x30m and 4x20m freestyle

And that’s a wrap for 2019…

We had our last swim meet for 2019 on Saturday 14th December.  It was a fun-filled day celebrating Christmas together with the Christmas BBQ, a visit from Santa and lolly bags for the kids. We’d like to thank all the volunteers who helped on the day.

We’re looking forward to a big second half season, with point scores going to the wire, social events, Battle in the Bay and starting back Sat 18th Jan 2020.

On behalf of the Swim Club Committee we wish all swimmers and their families a safe and relaxing Christmas, Happy New Year, and to keep up the swimming!

PS. If anyone lost a diamond earring on Saturday 7th December 2019, please contact Tim Doolan on president@drummoyneswimclub.com.au with details.

Meet a Volunteer – Matthew O’Connor

For this week’s article on getting to know our club volunteers, we interviewed our very own Life Member and club Marshall, Matt O’Connor.

Q: Matt – how many years have you been a club member?

A: About 15 years

Q: What motivates you to volunteer each week?

A: I am the club Marshall (the person who gets the swimmers in place for the upcoming races). Why – it’s a role that needs to be done otherwise, on a busy day, we would run out of time and get booted out of our lanes.

Q: What is your favourite memory?

A: Having 3 of my 4 kids swim with me for over 4 or so seasons.

Q: What’s the best thing about Swim Club?

A: I enjoy watching the kids grow into young adults and am impressed with the number of them taking a role in the running of the club – stand in starters, running the box so efficiently, timekeeping and the like.

Q: What is your favourite stroke?

A: Breaststroke.

Q: Who is your favourite swimmer?

A: Kieran Perkins. His win from lane 8 – the slowest qualifier – at the 1996 1500m final showed what a determined and tough guy he is – it is a lesson for everyone to keep pushing yourself even if you aren’t considered to be in the running.

Q: What is the next PB (Personal Best time) you are aiming for?

A: Not drowning before the season is over.

Q: Do you have any tips for other swimmers?

A: “Keep kicking!!!”

Matt is a very valued and respected volunteer and we couldn’t run Saturday swim club without him. We really appreciate your hard work and assistance. Thank you from all of us at DSC 😊

Ho! Ho! Ho! Christmas Meet This Saturday!

Dress in your festive best and join us for some Christmas fun this Saturday!

We will have some free Christmas snags on BBQ and, if the children are good, we’re hoping that Santa will pay us a visit!

We will also be holding a GIANT Christmas raffle that’s not to be missed, so bring along some ticket money!

Our swimming program this Saturday is as follows:

  • 50m, 30m, 20m Breaststroke Championship
  • 50m, 30m, 20m Freestyle
  • 200m, 4x30m, 4x20m Freestyle

Men’s night out shenanigans!

Some of our Club’s menfolk and their family/friends had a fun night out at Ribs & Burgers (our Major Gold Sponsor) for their yearly social catch up.

From all reports, the food was sensational. The men who were game enough to take on the baby pork and beef ribs were not disappointed – the best ribs our President has ever had!

Our restaurant host, Phil, kindly provided a welcome drink to the boys, on the house.

A fun evening for all, connecting with new and existing members over a drink and a meal. It was rumoured the Oxford Hotel was revisited afterwards, to discuss swimming techniques in further detail!
