We’ve recently been contacted by former Club member Donald Erickson, who is now 91 and living in Canberra.
The Erickson family have a long connection with the Club, dating back to our very early years.
Don’s Grandfather, a Norwegian migrant, raised five sons and three daughters in Drummoyne. Four of the boys were Club members. Don’s uncle Albert Erickson was Club Captain circa 1915 and his father Bertie Erickson was Club Captain in 1918.
Don joined DASC in 1940 and won his first trophy in 1941 – in the 33 yard handicap.
Don went on to win the George Wheaton BBB Memorial Trophy in 1944-45 and his name is still on it!

First up this week we have a 50m freestyle. This will be closely followed by heats for one of the most highly-prized trophies of the season – the George Wheaton 50m “BBB” Handicap!
BBB is short for Breaststroke, Backstroke and Butterfly. It’s a unique event in which competitors race each other with different “B” strokes in the same race on handicap. So a swimmer in one lane may swim Butterfly, another Breaststroke and a third Backstroke!
If you haven’t already nominated your “B” stroke check out the specific post about this event.
Following the BBB, our long distance swim will be 400m Freestyle. To qualify for the 400m race, you must have a current 200m time less than 200 seconds (3m 20s).
There are the usual 200m, 4x30m and 4x20m Freestyle options for those of us who haven’t posted a 200 second qualifying time (or haven’t posted one in a while…).
The BBB is a unique race in which the competitors race against each other swimming their favourite “B” stroke – Breaststroke, Backstroke or Butterfly!
The race is named in honour of George Wheaton – a former secretary of Drummoyne Swimming Club who tragically died after racing his four sons in a “Father and Son” race at the Club in 1937. The trophy was inaugurated in the 1939-40 season and is one of the Clubs most sought after prizes.
The Wheaton family have confirmed that they will join us pool side for the final, which this season is set for Saturday 27 November 2021.

June Wheaton
We regret to announce the sad passing of June Wheaton on Friday 20th November 2020 at the age of 92. June was the daughter-in-law of George Wheaton, married to his son Lindsay.
June loved her annual visits to Drummoyne Pool to present the trophy to the winner of the BBB and we will miss her cheery personality.
Read more about the Wheaton family and history here.
This week the highlight of swim club will be one of our most popular and important trophy races – the George Wheaton 50m BBB Handicap race. As we had so many entries and heats this year, we will hold two semi-finals before the final.
We usually have a large representation from the Wheaton family on deck to present the trophy. Unfortunately, this year due to COVID and an unwell family member this won’t be possible this season. We wish the family well during a difficult time and hope to see them again next season.

The Wheaton Family presenting the George Wheaton Memorial BBB Trophy a few years back
This Saturday is your opportunity to contest one of the most highly-prized trophies of the season – the George Wheaton 50m “BBB” Handicap!
BBB is short for Breaststroke, Backstroke and Butterfly. It’s a unique event in which competitors race each other with different “B” strokes in the same race on handicap. So a swimmer in one lane may swim Butterfly, another Breaststroke and a third Backstroke!
The BBB heats will be raced after the 50m Freestyle sprint.
To seed the event, we need to know which “B” stroke you will swim this Saturday. You must have already completed a 50m Time Trial for your chosen stroke, so if you’re new to the Club this season, choose a stroke for which you’ve already set a time.
Please select your chosen stroke (50m Breaststroke, Backstroke or Butterfly) by completing the form at the end of this link – https://forms.gle/VrzZWEb7Z5T8oeh38.
(If you forget to complete the form in advance there will still be an opportunity to nominate your stroke on Saturday morning).
Following the BBB, our long distance swim will be 400m Freestyle. To qualify for the 400m race, you must have a current 200m time less than 200 seconds (3m 20s). We have 200m, 4x30m and 4x20m Freestyle options for other swimmers.
Note the final for the BBB will be held on Saturday the 21st of November 2020.
Pool lift
The lifeguards have asked that junior swimmers please refrain from playing in and around the newly installed lift. Could you please pass this message on to your squids.
This week swim club starts to get a little bit more serious with with the heats for the first trophy of the season – the Geoff Roper 200m Freestyle Handicap trophy.
Last year’s winner was one of our fastest swimmers in Andrew Sharpe but, as with any handicap race, the winner could be anyone. Junior swimmers who are improving quickly have an especially good shot at taking home this silverware.
Next week we will be holding heats for our 2nd trophy race of the season – the wonderful George Wheaton BBB handicap race.
