Last week Premier Gladys Berejiklian flagged that outdoor swimming pools may reopen once the adult population reached the 70% double vaccination coverage level. The latest estimates prepared by the ABC suggest that we will hit the 70% mark on Sunday the 10th of October – giving us a possible pool opening date of Monday the 11th of October 2021.
Although the pool may open for personal exercise at this time, we may need to wait a bit longer until community sport, such as Swim Club racing and organised squad training are allowed.
Check out this video from Effortless Swimming for tips on how to improve your 100M freestyle and remember to try and implement these ideas when the pool reopens…
Swimming NSW presents a ZOOM session with Cate Campbell
The Sprint Queen could be live in your lounge room this September!
Four-time Olympian and Tokyo 2020 flagbearer, Cate Campbell, is back in Australia and keen to chat with our NSW swimmers who’ve endured weeks of lockdown and time out of the pool. Join Cate in this exciting Zoom session where you’ll meet Cate, go through a dryland workout together, and finish up with an opportunity to ask Cate your burning questions!
There are two sessions, one for the youngsters and one for teens:
NSW Roadmap to freedom unveiled for the fully vaccinated
Happily, the NSW Government on Thursday announced that public swimming pools will be able to reopen to fully vaccinated folks the Monday after the state reaches 70% vaccination coverage for people over 16. The expectation is that this will occur in mid-October.
The Premier has made it abundantly clear that the new privileges will only be available to those who are fully vaccinated:
“I cannot stress enough how important it is for people to get vaccinated – if you have not had both doses of the vaccine by the time we hit the 70 per cent milestone, you will not be able to take advantage of these freedoms,”
After a multi-million dollar make-over and a tweak to public health orders Dawn Fraser Pool is now open for swimming.
Advance bookings are essential and are available for one hour periods.
Bookings can be made up to 3 days in advance. You might need to stay up late to get a swim as new booking blocks open at midnight.
The two booking options are the 50m pool for lap swimming or the beach area for splashing around.
The one hour timeslot includes entry and exit so arrive on time as booking cannot be extended.
Swimming is not limited to those living in the Inner West Council area and is open to those living on the right side of the Iron Cove Bridge – as long as you live within 5km of the venue (or comply with any adjusted health orders if / when they change).

Stuck on the couch but itching to get back in the water (but not the cool water at Dawn Fraser Baths) get your swimming fix with this new Australian movie – Streamline.
Streamline is showing now in cinemas- if you can get over the border into a state or territory with open cinemas. Alternately, Streamline is available on the Stan streaming service from 16 September 2021.
Guess who and win a bottle of wine or a pair of goggles.
One of our regular swimmers has made their television acting debut with a role on a major advertising campaign… and is surely on a path down the red carpet to the Gold Logie stardom.
Have you seen the ad? Can you name the swimmer?
The first respondent to correctly name the swimmer will win a bottle of wine (for an adult) or a pair of goggles (for a squid).
Sadly, the inevitable has happened and because of the continuing pandemic the regular pool opening date of 1 September has come and gone without a splash.
In recent comments our Club Patron and Mayor, Angelo Tsirekas, lamented the delay but highlighted the importance Council places in keeping the community safe and also advised about the upgrade works that Council was able to undertake over the winter:
“The safety of the community comes first. Although we have had to postpone our eagerly anticipated reopening, during the off season we have been able to complete an exciting program of works at both Drummoyne and Cabarita swimming centres.”
Drummoyne Swimming Centre has received major treatment to the pool deck, grandstand, steel structures, roofs and pool shell, as well as an updated colour scheme to provide a more vibrant look and feel to the facility. It has taken the majority of the off season to grind back and level all floor surfaces, which were finished with a lighter, slip-resistant coating.
