Week 20: 800M Freestyle Champs and Family Fun Day!

And don’t forget we start at 7:00 this week…

We’ve come to the end of another summer swimming season and it’s time for the annual family fin day races and the 800M Freestyle Championships.

800M Freestyle Championship

First up we have the serious side of things. The 800M Freestyle Championship race is open to everyone. Racing starts at 7:00 sharp.

Family Fun Events

The 800M will be closely followed by our favourite races of the year, including:

  • The thong race – BYO flip flops or grab a pair from the lost property box in the swim club control room before they are donated to charity [there are a few there :-)], and
  • The inflatables race – BYO inflatable Unicorn or other animal or boogie board.
  • The Geribo Cup (Chocolate Trophy) Relay – get your teams together and be ready to nominate your team members first thing on Saturday morning, and
  • The Family Relay – who can know off the Svoboda family this year? Blended families required and welcome…

Breakfast

If you are not lucky enough to be part of the Geribo Cup winning team or you want more for breakfast than chocolate… come along to the Watershed Kitchen after the day’s festivities for a final post swimming breakfast.

Laps for Life 2022!

DSC swimmers are carving up the pool in the Laps for Life Challenge again this summer.

There is still time to support our swimmers raising funds for Reachout.com. So if you have a little spare cash head to our team page and make a donation.

Duncan Lyon and Sueellen Forster got off to a flying start in the fundraising stakes and Georgina Maniscalo and the Sellars boys are coming home strongly as the month progresses! Well done to you all.

Jessica Bell – you really should ask your parents to support you!

Duncan Lyon has set himself a goal of 50km for the month and has already hit 42.2km. Well done Duncan! Will you wear that Ian Thorpe signed Laps for Life cap when you hit the 50km mark?

Thanks to Ian Thorpe for visiting DSC!

Thanks very much to Australian swimming legend Ian Thorpe for visiting us at Drummoyne Swimming Club last Saturday.

Ian’s visit was as Patron of REACHOUT.COM as a result of our fundraising efforts in the Laps for Life Challenge.

ReachOut is the most accessed online mental health service for young people and their parents in Australia.

https://about.au.reachout.com/home

Noah Hale, pictured above with Ian was the club’s and Swimming NSW’s largest affiliated fundraiser.

Ian spoke brilliantly about REACHOUT.COM, his experiences and challenges as a swimmer and life in general. He offered some wonderful tips on both swimming and getting the most out of life.

A very attentive crowd for a change!

Little kids and big kids were in awe of Ian.

Canada Bay Cup Winners Crowned!

The Mayor’s Canada Bay Cup was swum and won last Saturday and this year’s champion team were from Drummoyne. Mayor Angelo was happy to hand the trophy over to some locals this summer.

Ian Thorpe

Ian Thorpe is visiting us as the Patron of REACHOUT.com after our excellent fund raising efforts last season in the Laps for Life Challenge. Ian will talk about the wonderful work that Reachout.com does on youth mental health. Following that Ian will assist Mayor Angelo to start the Canada Bay Cup and present the trophy. Ian will then stick around for a short while to meet swimmers and pose for photos.

Swimmers from Boolaroo Speers Point swimming club who also raised an extraordinary amount of money in the Laps for Life challenge will be joining us as well. It is great to be able to share Ian’s visit with them.

Huge Raffle

This week we have a huge raffle to close out fund raising efforts for the season: This week’s prizes include:

  • A bottle of wine

Morning tea

After swimming we’ll have a morning tea to meet and mingle with Ian and our visitors from Lake Macquarie. Lynette Brown has secured a supply of chocolates. Please bring a plate or cake to share.

Ian Thorpe Visit to Drummoyne Pool this Saturday!

In recognition of the Drummoyne Swimming Club’s stellar fundraising efforts in the 2021 REACHOUT.com Laps for Life Challenge Ian Thorpe AM will be joining us pool side this Saturday the 19th of March from 9:30.

Members, please make sure you and the whole family come along. Invite your friends to come for a swim as well. New swimmers are always welcome.

Who is this Ian Thorpe bloke?

Ian Thorpe is an Australian swimming icon who needs no introduction to most of us over 30s. And a lot of the youngsters will know him from his excellent commentary stints on Olympic broadcasts. Some of the youngsters may not know why us adults are quite so excited about Ian joining us pool side this weekend. So, to help get them up to speed (and to relive some amazing memories) find below a bunch of clips of Ian’s feats.

Ian Thorpe taking out his first Olympic Gold in the 400M Freestyle event at the Sydney Olympics… as a 16 year old
And later that night… Ian Thorpe anchors the Australian 4x 100M relay team to a memorable victory.
Four years later Ian Thorpe went on to win both the 200M and 400M Freestyle events at the Athens Olympics beating Peter van den Hoogenband and Michael Phelps in the 200M race, which was dubbed “The Race of the Century”.

New volunteers wanted!

New Registrar and Treasurer needed for next season

Swim club is a success because of the hard work put in by the volunteers that help run it. Every contribution is important, be it informal jobs like helping out with timing and setting up and packing up on Saturday through to the more formal jobs that come with being part of the club’s management committee.

After many years of service two committee members will be handing over the baton after this season.

Michael Donnellan our Registrar is stepping aside from that role. Michael has, on our behalf, successfully wrestled with the beast that is Swim Central to sort out our registration and membership data. Thankfully the system is much more user friendly these days for swimmers and the Registrar.

Phil Hayward has ably handled the accounts as Treasurer and will leave the role with the club in a strong financial position. Phil will continue with his other roles at the club – coaching and refereeing.

Thanks to both Michael and Phil for their contributions in the roles of Registrar and Treasurer.

The Registrar and Treasurer roles will need to be filled ahead of next season. If you think that you have the skills and capacity to assist with either of these roles please reach out to Adrian on 0424 561 831 for more information.
