Drummoyne Wins 5 Gold Medals in Battle!

Some tremendous individual performances saw Drummoyne Swimming Club swimmers win 5 Age Group Championships at the 2020 Battle on the Bay, together with another seven top 3 positions.

Congratulations to our individual medal winners Andrew Sharpe, Audrey Allan, Christian Taylor, Gabrielle Perkins, Hayden Howard, Isabelle Kerr, Jacob Johnstone, Kellen Parker, Lily Borozan, Mary-Lou Doolan, Skye Lewis, Will Howard and Ziani Viola for their impressive all-round swimming results.

All of our Drummoyne swimmers clubbed together to achieve the second highest point score across the four competing clubs, with the highest average point score going to Leichhardt Swimming Club, crowning them as winners of the 2020 Battle on the Bay Club trophy.

The highlights of the evening were the relay events at the end of the carnival, with Drummoyne dominating in the 11-12 and 13-14 year old mixed 4x50m relays and narrowly missing out by a split second in an exhilarating 10x50m that chopped and changed with every lap!

The full results of the 2020 Battle on the Bay are available here.

A big thank you to Leichhardt Swimming Club for successfully hosting this year’s event with entries for 289 swimmers. It’s gratifying to see the on-going success of the carnival in its 11th year, after it was initiated and first hosted by Drummoyne Swimming Club in 2010.

We look forward to taking up the battle again next year, which Ashfield has tentatively offered to host in their brand new swimming facility, which is currently under construction and due to open in August 2020.

20km Rottnest Island Swim – Annette Jamieson

This Saturday Annette Jamieson will be swimming 20km from Perth to Rottnest Island in the annual Rottnest Island Challenge.

She has been training up to 30km per week for 4 months – many hours following the black line in the pool along with a few adventures and challenges in the ocean along the way. It’s going to be one of her biggest achievements to date, following her successful Channel Island crossing last year.

You can track Annette on her journey by downloading the MapSwim app from the Apple App Store or website mapswim.com/rotto . Look for Annette Jamieson in race #70, starting at 5:50am Perth time / 8:50am Sydney time in wave ‘A’. She expects the swim to take about 6-6.5 hours – conditions permitting – which means she should be triumphantly finishing just as we begin our own challenge in the Battle on the Bay!

Husband Mark and family will be posting on Annette’s Facebook page from the support boat and Annette would love to read your messages when she’s done!

Want to donate?

Some of you know that Annette is on the Board of Dymocks Children’s Charities and the team does AMAZING grassroots work to get brand new books of choice to kids in need. Funds raised will be donated to an indigenous school in regional Western Australia – Djidi Djidi and for the $ raised, Dymocks doubles the value provided to kids and the donation is tax deductible. The students are very excited and grateful at the prospect of being able to pick new books to read. Here is a link to her Fundraising Page. Any donation will be greatly appreciated.

Tom Brown Backstroke – Did You Know?

This Saturday morning it’s swim club as usual at 7.30am followed by the Battle on the Bay swimming carnival, starting at 3pm in the afternoon.

Program for this Saturday includes:

  • 100m, 50m, 30m, 20m Freestyle Championship
  • Form Stroke:
    • Final Tom Brown 50m Backstroke Handicap
    • 50m, 30m, 20m Backstroke Handicap
  • 4x50m, 4x30m and 4x20m Medley

We are delighted to announce that members of the Brown family will be attending to present the Tom Brown perpetual trophy to the winner.

Lynette Brown provided us with an interesting bit of history on some of our club trophies, including the Tom Brown:

Back in the 1970’s George Brown, Bill Gallie & Fred Congdon decided that the club needed a trophy for the form strokes (the BBB).  This was to encourage everyone to try different stokes.  In those days, you entered for your preferred BBB stroke each week, so if you liked Breaststroke that’s all you swam until the Championships started.

So George named the Trophy after his father Tom Brown and, as his family liked Backstroke, he took the Backstroke trophy.  Bill Gallie was a Breaststroke fanatic and Fred Congdon was passionate about Butterfly.

Battle on the Bay – Leichhardt – 3pm Saturday

The 2020 Battle on the Bay swimming carnival starts at 3pm sharp this Saturday at Leichhardt Park Aquatic Centre.  Swim Club will be on in the morning as usual, giving a few hours rest before you dive in to race against our neighbouring swimming clubs – Leichhardt, Ashfield and Enfield.

There will be 280 swimmers at the carnival, so it will be crowded in the pool area and parking will be tight. Please aim to arrive between 2-2.30pm to give yourself plenty of time to arrive, warm up and bond with our team. If you arrive late and miss your race, you will lose points for yourself and the club, so please be punctual as Leichhardt will be running the carnival like clockwork to fit in all of the events.

The afternoon involves a fun swimming carnival to determine the fastest Club on the Bay!  Every swimmer will earn valuable points for their Club in the fight for the Battle on the Bay Trophy.  The fastest individual swimmers will be awarded Age Group medals.

Points to remember:

  • Carnival starts at 3pm sharp. Please arrive between 2-2.30pm to give yourself plenty of time to find parking, line up for pool entry and for a warm up (if you feel like it!)
  • The event is expect to go until at least 7.30pm. If you will be arriving late or need to leave early please let Duncan know ASAP
  • Food and drinks are available for purchase from the pool café but we suggest bringing your own snacks and drinks to keep the energy and hydration up or share among your friends
  • If you have your own Drummoyne cossies and/or swimming cap, please wear them on the day to show your proud colours!
  • Please bring your cheering voice and cheer on your fellow Drummoyne Swim Club members

If you have any queries please contact Duncan Lyon (Race Secretary) or Tim Doolan (Club President).

Good luck to everyone and have a great day!
