Farewell Noel Wheaton

Drummoyne Swimming Club is sad to learn of the recent passing of Noel Wheaton, the last surviving son of George Wheaton.  George was a former Treasurer of the Club and a prominent swimming official.  His four sons, George, Neville, Noel, and Lindsay, were all members of the Club.

George Wheaton tragically collapsed and died after racing in a “Father and Son” race at the Club in 1937 at the age of 53.  Noel swam in his father’s final 220 yard handicap race and went on to be a successful swimmer in his own right, swimming into his 90’s.

The George Wheaton 50m BBB Handicap Trophy is one of the most hotly-contested events of the year, in which swimmers race against each other with different form strokes – Breaststroke, Backstroke or Butterfly – in the same race.

This year’s “BBB” Final will be contested on 30 November 2013 with a poignant memory of George and his sons.

George Wheaton Family Tribute Day – Saturday 30th November 2013

George Wheaton

The following Obituary appeared in the Sydney Morning Herald on Saturday 9 January 1937:

Mr. G. Wheaton.

Mr. George Wheaton, a prominent swimming official, collapsed and died shortly after competing in a 220yds race at the Drummoyne baths on Thursday.

Mr. Wheaton, who was 53 years of age, was for several years a delegate to the New South Wales Amateur Swimming Association. He was honorary secretary of the Western Districts Amateur Swimming Association, and treasurer of the Drummoyne club. His four sons, George, Neville, Noel, and Lindsay, are all members of the club. After a service at St, Bede’s, Drummoyne, yesterday, the body was cremated at the Northern Suburbs Crematorium.

George’s last surviving son, Noel, recently passed away, at the age of 93, bringing this sad chapter in the Club’s history to a peaceful close.

On Saturday 30th November 2013, Drummoyne Swimming Club will be paying a special tribute to George and his sons on the occasion of the George Wheaton 50m BBB Handicap Final (BBB stands for Breaststroke, Backstroke and Butterfly).

We are fortunate to have four generations of the Wheaton family attending the BBB final this Saturday, being George’s daughter-in-law, two grandsons, a great grandson and great-great grandson. The Wheaton family will start the event and present the George Wheaton BBB trophy to the winner.

The occasion will commemorated by Mayor Angelo Tsirekas, Club Patron, and Craig Laundy MP, Federal Member For Reid.

Members and friends of the Club are welcome to join us in honouring the Wheaton family this Saturday.  The Club meet will commence at 7.30am with the 100m Freestyle Sprint followed by the BBB event.
