Welcome back Silver Sponsor Inspirations Paint Five Dock

Inspirations Paint Five Dock – Returning Silver Sponsor

Please join me in welcoming back our generous Silver Sponsor Inspirations Paint Five Dock. Alfio and Katia Arlotta joined us as sponsors last summer and have graciously decided to support the club again this season.

Please show your appreciation to Alfio and Katia by utilising their services and purchasing your painting supplies from their store on Lyons Road near Brent Street.

Keep an eye out for Alfio at the pool this summer – Alfio is a keen tennis player but we’re trying to get him to join us for some some laps.

Special Thanks to the Canada Bay Club!

New grant from Canada Bay Club

Our Gold Sponsor the Canada Bay Club has once again shown their commitment to the Club and approved a grant to purchase some much needed components for the timing and race management system.

The Canada Bay Club has been a magnificent supporter of the Drummoyne Swimming Club over the years and their regular grants help us keep the Club running smoothly. In previous years they have provided funds for diving block covers, timers and other essential equipment needed to operate the Club.

This year the grant will allow us to purchase:

  • A new radio unit linking the pool deck with the club room
  • A new starter’s microphone
  • A new starter’s wireless unit
  • A new wireless scoreboard adapter

While, this may not sound all that exciting, it is super important to the functioning of Saturday mornings. All of this equipment will help us keep races running to schedule and with minimal errors.

Show your support to the Canada Bay Club

The Canada Bay Club has been a meeting place for the local community for more than 50 years. Since opening in 1966, the culturally diverse club has grown from a small social sports centre to a club with state-of-the-art function rooms, two restaurants, live entertainment and a kids’ arcade.

As a champion of the Inner West’s local community, Canada Bay Club supports schools, sporting associations, charities and community groups through its grant program.

Next time you are planning a night out head to the Canada Bay Club.

FYI, we’ll be holding our end of season awards at the Canada Bay Club’s sister club the Concord Bowling Club in late May. Stay tuned for more details…

Reminder: Please sign up for the All Schools Relay!

Our second relay for the year is the Canada Bay Club sponsored All Schools Relay.

The “All Schools Relay” is a relay race for everyone associated with a local school. It’s open to kids, parents, grandparents and others – just nominate the school you have an association with.

This relay race will be held on Saturday the 27th of February 2021 at Swim Club.

Please follow this link to enter. Please remember to enter for each person who is planning to swim – Enter here.

Encourage new swimmers to come along

We want to use the event to encourage new swimmers to come along and give swim club a go. So, please spread the word amongst your school friends and ask them to come down for a free trial. It would be optimal if they could come down for a race before the 27th to get a time.

Format

The format will be a mixed handicap relay. The number of participants will be determined from the entries received. There may be more than one team from some schools.

Planned activities in the 2nd half of the season…

This information was buried deep in our newsletter last week so just to make sure you know about what is coming up here it is again…

Canada Bay Club All Schools Relay

As you know we’ve got the 2021 Battle on the Bay coming up on the 20th of February. That’s our chance to come together as a club and show our neighbouring clubs just what we’re about by knocking Leichhardt off the top of the leader board and having “Drummoyne” inscribed on the trophy.

Following on from the Battle on the Bay we’ve got a few other initiatives planned, including:

The Canada Bay Club All Schools Relay – This new relay will be held on the 27th of February 21 and we’ll put out some information about, this starting next week. The trophy for this race is dedicated to the Canada Bay Club – one of our great supporters over the years.

See this week’s separate post about how to register for this event.

The Food Bank Raffle

The Food Bank Raffle – As some of you may remember last season we donated the proceeds of one of our raffles to support Bush Fire relief. We’re looking to continue that concept again this season. As a club we’re going to support Food Bank.

The proceeds from our raffle on the 27th of February will be donated to Food Bank to support the work they are doing fighting hunger.

Did you know that: three in ten Australians now experiencing food insecurity had not gone hungry before the pandemic and that young people – Gen Z are being hardest hit by the impact of COVID-19?

Foodbank is addressing this crisis by supplying more food and groceries than ever before to charities for distribution to vulnerable people.

Laps for Life Challenge

As a second charitable initiative, we’re proposing to get involved with Laps for Life in support of youth mental health – Laps for Life is a swimming challenge that raises money to support youth mental health initiatives by Reachout.com.

We’ll set a club challenge and, over the course of March, use Adult and Junior Squads to meet our collective goal. Swimmers will be asked to seek donations from friends and family along the way.

More information about both these charitable initiatives will be forthcoming in the next few weeks.

COVID Safety

A friendly reminder that as a community sporting club, we must comply with NSW Government rules on COVID-19. All swimmers and spectators are required to comply with the Club’s COVID Safety Plan and Drummoyne Swimming Centre rules. In a nutshell our COVID-Safety Plan is:

Have fun, but… be safe and protect others! Arrive ready to swim; Register your attendance using Team App (swimmers and spectators); Get in, Swim, Get out; Follow social distancing rules; Sanitise and wash your hands; Minimise use of the amenities; Don’t share equipment, food or drinks and Go home when you’re done.

Find us on Team App

The new marshalling arrangements seemed to work efficiently and the hand sanitiser stations were well used. Feedback from pool management was that they were generally happy with the way we operated but that social distancing in the stands was a little lax at times and could be improved.

Could all members please be mindful of complying with the 1.5m social distancing requirements between family groups this weekend and moving forward.
